Leave of world Movie Review

Story: Amanda Sanford’s (Julia Roberts) surprise staycation with her family turns into a mysterious nightmare after two strangers land up at their door and a cyber attack leads to strange occurrences around them.

Review: When the Sanfords leave for a quick getaway to a nearby town, little do they know that their lives are going to change forever. It all starts when the Sanfords - a regular American family of four, going through the usual pulls and pressures of life, decide to go on a weekend break for some much needed peace and quiet.

Amanda finds a steal deal online for a palatial villa on the outskirts of a neighbouring town. They set off on a long drive to their rented home, planning to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with each other. But soon, mysterious and unexplained things start happening around them. First, a cargo ship docks onto the shores of a public beach where the Sanfords are soaking in some sun. This is followed by more weird stuff like a blackout and a strange father-daughter duo landing up at the villa where the Sanfords are staying, claiming it to be their own. As they reluctantly let them stay back for the night, it's the beginning of a much bigger and deeply sinister nightmare that seems to be a result of a massive cyber attack.

Director and co-writer Sam Esmail feeds on our curiosity right from the beginning until the end, slowly revealing the weird occurrences, one strange incident at a time. But at 2 hours and 21 minutes, Esmail takes too long to give us the answers and stretches the unexplained chaos for a very long time. And to top it all, he doesn't do it any faster. The slow pace of the screenplay is a real buzzkill and robs this thriller of the thrill that was expected out of it.

Julia Roberts, an actress par excellence has done roles that are far deeper and better defined than this. So, to play a paranoid mother groping in the dark for answers about what's happening around her and to her family, comes effortlessly to her. She does a fine job, but frankly there isn't much for her to perform here except that one monologue on mass illusion. She is so believable and right when she says, "We use paper straws and order the free range chicken, but deep down we know we are not fooling anyone."

Ethan Hawke and the rest of the cast perform well too, but their characters are written as a bunch of cliches. Like Archie Sandford (Charlie Evans), has to be a horny young boy just because he is a teenager and will lech after any girl he sees, thanks to his raging hormones. His younger sister Farrah Mackenzie, who plays the Friends-obsessed Rose is endearing. GH Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) are the scary black family, who intrude on a privileged white family’s staycation.

For a thriller, Leave The World Behind has sporadic action, which is far too less to make it an edge-of-the-seat-entertainer that it could have been. It presents a grim and apocalyptic scenario that’s absolutely possible in the world we live in. But all in all, this is an oft-repeated world-is-coming-to-an-end plot that goes around many circles and gets lost in the loop of confusion, leaving you with more questions than answers in the end.
